GM Petrov’s Pirc defense - White plays 4.Bd3

Opening: B07: Pirc Defense

Player(s):

In the second video of his series on the Pirc, GM Marian takes us with him through one of the most well-known lines: after 1.e4 d6, 2.d4 Nf6, 3.Nc3 g6, white plays 4.Bd3. White is defending the e pawn, and he can skip a4 after the Bishop move. At this point, White can develop his Knight to different positions. Black has many setups, such as c5, where the game could switch to a Sicilian or a Benoni; c6 and then e5 or b5, which is the most common plan. Even Bg4 and Nc6, with the idea to fight for the d4 outpost, are good plans. Overall these lines are not dangerous, and Black is fine.
