GM Davorin Kuljasevic - Mastering Piece Trades - Video 3

Opening: :

Player(s):

Video 3 - Exploiting the opponent’s weaknesses

Many of our actions in a chess game are guided by the idea of exploiting the opponent's weaknesses. Whether it is a tactical operation that focuses on temporary flaws in the opponent’s piece placement or coordination, or a strategic operation with a long-term goal of exploiting a backward pawn or a weak square, it is often this idea that permeates our planning and execution in a chess game. Therefore, studying this topic in the context of piece trades is inevitable. Some piece trades can facilitate our exploitation of the opponent’s weaknesses (like Example 5 in Video 1 of the series), while a wrong trade could help the opponent’s weakness disappear. Such decisions can be very important. By the same logic, we sometimes need to decline a piece trade in order to continue pursuing vulnerable points in the opponent’s position.
