GM Davorin Kuljasevic - Mastering Piece Trades - Video 6

Video 6 - King’s role in piece trades

King has a special role in a chess game. On the one hand, it has to be protected at all times, particularly when the opponent has many pieces on the board. On the other hand, it can become a powerful piece in the endgame. These two aspects need to be remembered whenever we are making piece trades. This is because every trade could help us:

1) improve the king’s mobility
2) limit the king’s mobility
3) magnify the king’s vulnerability
4) diminish the king’s vulnerability

This chapter explores these four elements. First, we look at several endgame positions that illustrate how incorrect piece trade decisions can empower the opponent’s king in the endgame (scenario 1). We also examine what happens if we decline the piece trade (scenario 2).
