GM Davorin Kuljasevic - Mastering Piece Trades - Video 8

Opening: :

Video 8: Premature rook trade

Today, we will examine a type of piece trade decision that is quite common in practice and yet the one that people get wrong so often. This is the dilemma of whether you should trade rook(s) on the open file or not. When your rook and your opponent’s rook oppose each other on an open file, it is very tempting to get rid of them and simplify matters. While such trades are sometimes inevitable, I would argue that in many instances, the trade should be avoided or, at the very least, postponed. We will examine two typical scenarios:
Scenario #1: No one has leverage on the open file, so keeping tension is better than releasing it.
Scenario #2: The open file is not of great significance, and we should keep the rook for some other purpose (move it to a different file, use it in the attack).
