GM Yermo Teaches You Openings! - Grunfeld Part 4

Opening: D84: Grunfeld: Grunfeld Gambit Accepted

Player(s): Lputian, Yermolinsky, Stauffer, Zhao

The new volume of the ongoing What Every Russian Schoolboy Knows saga is taking us away from the endgame, which may surprise some of my audience. After all, I spent countless hours professing my love and appreciation for the concluding part of the chess game. Yet, it is time to branch out into a new subject. I would like to share my own experiences in learning some openings that became cornerstones of my repertoire for years to come. The best way to start is with the Grunfeld Defense. I started playing it from the age of 13, largely by accident, but it quickly proved to be a good fit for me, because of the tactical nature of the opening. In the beginning, I didn't care much for memorizing exact theoretical lines. Instead, I studied supplemental games, given in the monograph, to familiarize myself with the ideas that flow out of the opening moves into the middlegame and the endgame. Naturally, there have been a few bumps along the way.

In the first series of videos, I will focus on the Bf4 lines, which I often encountered in my early Grunfeld days.
