GM Petrov’s Pirc defense - White plays 4.Be3

Opening: B07: Pirc defense

In this chapter, GM Marian shows us probably the most popular line in which White is trying to make the same setup as in the Sicilian Dragon. 4.Be3, and then 0-0-0. Black usually goes c6 and b5, trying to counterattack quickly. White has then different ideas, like Bh6 or starts an attack with his pawns; in this case, black should go h5 at some moment. If white skips f3, you can go Ng4. If f3, then 0-0 and e5 is a good line for black. There are many deviations which you can learn here.
