Attack with LarryC: U.S. Championship - 40 years ago

Opening: B93: Sicilian: Najdorf, 6.f4

Player(s): Tarjan, Gilden

GM Larry Christiansen started paying close attention to the US Championship in the '70's, when he was an emerging high-school player. It was Fischer's era, and the level of play in the US rose by a notch or two, due to the infusion of young blood: players like Walter Browne, James Tarjan and John Grefe, who became co-champion along with Lubomir Kavalek in 1973. The US Championship that year was help in El Paso and it was characterized by many fine games. Today Larry shows us the game James Tarjan vs. Lawrence Gilden. A fulgid example of sparkling attacking play at the US Championship, 40 years ago.
