Game OF the Week: GM Badur Jobava vs GM Vladimir Malakhov

Opening: C54: Giuoco Piano

Player(s): Jobava, Malakhov

Three-time U.S. Champion GM Joel Benjamin brings you a new show every Friday at 15:00 Server Time. Joel is regarded by many as one of the best commentators and analysts' we have in the game today -- so if you want to get ahead of the game, get ready to tune-in!

The Black Sea Country's final convened six top players of that eastern European region. Ivan Cheparinov won the double round robin with a fine score of 7 out of 10; Vladimir Malakhov had hopes of catching him in the last round, but lost to L-D Nisipeanu to join into a tie for second. Malakhov, one of the many somewhat anonymous 2700 Russian players, still had a nice tournament, with his first round game with the ELO favorite Badur Jobava, making a startling impression.

Jobava tried to create something a bit new in the opening, but creativity is only rewarded if it's backed up by strong moves. Let's follow GM Joel's analysis of this interesting and instructive game!
