GM Joel Chess week Recap 2017/11/13

Added on 11.13.2017

Chess, being for the most part a non-physical sport, rarely requires players to play through injury.  But in the Champions Showdown in St. Louis, we saw that and more in an unusual kind of tournament.     The Showdown pitted eight players in four arduous deathmatches.  The players contested games at different fast time controls—G/5. G/10, G/20, and G/30.  The match between Magnus Carlsen and Ding Liren started later, so I’ll recap that one next week.  The other three matches are completed...Full Story

Added on 11.01.2017

Hi, everybody! Happy Halloween! Here is a report from my LIVE show. Tonight was All Hallows Eve, or Halloween as we say in the States. So when I was asked in an email what to do about the Halloween Gambit as Black, I couldn’t resist starting the show with it. It begins with the outrageous sacrifice 1e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 Nxe5!?. Black has several ways to gain a nice advantage if he knows what he’s doing. Here is the game:   your web browser and/or your host do not support iframes...Full Story

Watch the video! This week I have analysis of an interesting match between Vassily Ivanchuk and Wei Yi, followed by an intro to the European Team Championship. The organizers of the Hoogeveen chess festival chose wisely with the elite grandmasters in this match.  The veteran Ivanchuk is one of the most uncompromising players on the circuit.  His level can be very variable, but he can always be counted on for fighting chess.  The teenager Wei Yi has already become a favorite on my show as he...Full Story

GM Joel’s tribute to GM Lombardy

Added on 10.17.2017

This week I have a special tribute to one of America's all-time great players. One by one, all the heroes of my childhood pass on. In the last few years on my show, I have honored Larry Evans, Robert Byrne, Walter Browne, and Arthur Bisguier. To this list, we add William Lombardy, who died recently in California, a bit before his 80th birthday.   GM William Lombardy (December 4, 1937 – October 13, 2017) Lombardy's career was full of achievements. He became, I believe, the first...Full Story

Coach Dan Heisman’s NEW video series!

Added on 10.04.2017

What is "thought process"? It's related to thinking, of course, but there is a difference between thinking and thought process. In a sense, we can break "chess thinking" into three different types, each representing a different class where you may make errors. Let's put the process in class one, knowledge in area two, and analytical in class 3. The latter usually occurs at a higher level,  but it's useful to know how errors during analysis can happen. There is also a grey area, which we can...Full Story

L. vs L.

Added on 09.22.2017

Levon and Liren are the last two men standing, after six tough rounds of the KO being played in Tbilisi.   In the next four days, the two top players will play 4 standard games, with time control 90 30. Rating-wise Aronian is favorite over Ding, but we have seen so many top-seeded players surrender during the World Cup, starting from Magnus and down to all the top ten, excluding the two final contenders, that predicting the final winner is almost impossible. The World Cup format is an...Full Story

"Statistics is a branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, analysis, interpretation, presentation, and organization of data. In applying statistics to, e.g., a scientific, industrial, or social problem, it is conventional, to begin with, a statistical population or a statistical model process to be studied." Mamamia, it really sounds boring beyond imagination, doesn't it? But actually, stats is something that can give us a somewhat precise idea of trends and events that happen on a...Full Story

World Cup 2017

Added on 08.30.2017

August has been an intense month for all the chess fans and, of course, for the elite players, who gathered in St Louis to play the Sinquefield Cup and the Rapid&Blitz Grand Chess Tour events. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave won his first top tournament, jumping again over 2800, and establishing himself in second place in the live rating list. The Rapid&Blitz event generated a lot of interest because Garry Kasparov decided to join the fray again, making the St Louis Grand Chess tour event the most...Full Story

A great comeback

Added on 08.19.2017

Yes, let's face it, it was just great to see Garry Kasparov sit at the board, make all the faces that those of my generation have loved and criticized - as if a chess player of his strength would need a poker-face - and join the fray again, after 12 years of chess inactivity.  Photo by Eric Rosen You can see a set of nice shots HERE I can't see anything negative in Kasparov's comeback. The result? C'mon, it doesn't matter.  Watching the games, I have seen kibitzers going for the squalid...Full Story

The King is back!

Added on 08.13.2017

It was March 2005, when the strongest player ever announced his retirement from professional chess. After 20 years at the top of the game, Garry Kimovich Kasparov declared: "Before this tournament, I made a conscious decision that Linares 2005 will be my last professional [tournament] and today I played my last professional game." He won Linares 2005, ahead of Topalov, Anand, Leko, Adams, Kasindzhanov and Vallejo Pons. Nonetheless, the decision had been taken: the greatest players of all time...Full Story

Revolution Revisited!

Added on 08.13.2017

GM Alex Yermolinsky, who recently won the US Senior Open, is one of the best content creators in the chess scene. Alex is always ready to explore new paths, without losing sight of the more traditional theory. In this series, GM Yermolinsky revisits Kasparov's point of view on some of the most common openings.  Garry Kasparov's “Revolution in the 70's” was published in 2007 as the first book of “On Modern Chess” series. Soon it was followed by three tomes on his matches with Karpov, and then...Full Story
