***** Quiz 21 ***** ICC Chess History and Trivia Quiz #21--By Naisortep "I saw him in a far corner of the tournament hall His game was removed from the others. He sat hunched over the board, studying it intently. He had to, for Joe Kennedy is legally blind. We've all seen blind players before. What makes Joe so different? Well, Joe is not only legally blind, he is hard of hearing to the point of deafness, cannot speak without an interpreter and, to top it all off, he cannot walk. Oh, I forgot to mention that he has two steel rods in his backbone to help support his upper torso. "... Joe's rating is a healthy 2058 (as of this writing) and has been steadily going up ... In order for Joe to read anything his family has to painstakingly blow it up five to six times normal so he can see it. It takes him over two hours just to study one page of a chess book! But he doesn't give up. ".... Until recently, Joe used to punch his own clock, but now his family does it for him. Joe was winning a game but lost on time when his hand would not allow him to punch the button on the clock. He missed it four times, then his flag fell. Sadly, his opponent would not allow Joe to continue and claimed a win on time. His family also keeps score for him, as he cannot control a pen well enough to write legibly. ".... I want to tell you something. Joe is just one of the many handicapped chessplayers all over the country, the unsung heroes of chess.
