Today, we remember the Grandmaster Milan Matulovic, born in Belgrade on June 10, 1935.
Twice Yugoslav champion, he was part of the Rest of the World team that faced the Soviet Union in 1970.
His highest unofficial rating was 2560 Elo, reached in July 1970, placing him at number 25 globally. With the Yugoslav team, he participated in five Olympiads between 1964 and 1972, winning two team silvers and two bronzes and one individual gold and two silvers.
He boasts important victories against Fischer, Korchnoi, Timman, Reshevsky, Portisch, Hübner, Polugaevsky, Larsen, Szabo, Mecking, Gligoric, Hort, and Ljubojevic.
Famous for his association with the Morra Gambit in the Sicilian Defense, he is also remembered for some on-board indiscretions, such as the habit of moving a piece, pressing the clock, and then taking back the move with a cheeky "j'adoube."
