Crafty Caruana

Added on 09.12.2023

IM Malcolm Pein September 12, 2023   THE Champions Chess Tour continued at the end of August with the Julius Baer Generation Cup, the fifth and penultimate event played online. Magnus Carlsen took part, even though he is already qualified for the Tour final at the end of the year. The tournament was split into three divisions, with 56 players in total, of which eight were in Division 1. The world number one reached the final with three comfortable match wins over Amin Tabatabaei...Full Story

Novel format

IM Malcolm Pein September 11, 2023   THE inaugural World Rapid Team Championship was staged by FIDE in Dusseldorf and sponsored by WR Logistics GmbH. The tournament lacked the formality normally associated with a world championship staged by the governing body, as it was composed of club teams, as well as squads hired specifically for the event. It was certainly a welcome addition to the chess calendar, with many of the world's finest players rubbing shoulders with the amateurs, but it...Full Story

Alexander Volzhin

Added on 09.10.2023

IM Malcolm Pein September 10, 2023   Grandmaster Alexander Volzhin hung up his pawns in 2005, according to the Mega Database, and shortly afterwards turned up in London, where he worked for Barclays Capital. He is now part of the management team at FIDE HQ in Lausanne, where he is described on the governing body’s website as Financial Advisor. He was a very fine player and I recently came across this absolute gem of a game from the Russian Championship. A Volzhin – G Tunik 53rd...Full Story

Piano lessons

Added on 09.09.2023

IM Malcolm Pein September 9, 2023   THE huge popularity of the Giuoco Piano has led to a proliferation of move orders. It needs a huge amount of work to keep abreast of all the nuances. At the FIDE World Cup in Baku, one of the elite, Arjun Erigaisi of India, fell into a bad line and his compatriot, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, took full advantage. Pragg went on to win the match in the ninth game and qualified for the Candidates. A Erigaisi – R Praggnanandhaa FIDE World Cup, Baku Giuoco...Full Story

Flash Gordon

Added on 09.08.2023

IM Malcolm Pein September 8, 2023   AS WE saw on Wednesday, the Northumbria Masters was an astonishingly successful tournament, generating one GM and six IM norms. In addition to the two closed sections, chief organiser Tim Wall also staged an Open and four rating-restricted sections for club players at the event in Newcastle. The Open was won by local grandmaster Danny Gormally and Icelandic GM Gudmundur Kjartansson with 7/9. Just half a point behind and continuing his excellent form...Full Story

Smirin’s smart finish

Added on 09.07.2023

IM Malcolm Pein September 7, 2023   THE Fide World Cup has a $1.8 million prize fund. Each round of the 26-day-long knockout comprised a two-game match, followed by Rapid and Blitz tie-breaks. If the two Classical games ended 1-1, there was a second two-game match, with players receiving 25 minutes and a 10-second increment. If that ended 1-1, there were two more games with 10 minutes plus a 10-second increment. Some matches required two more games with five minutes and three seconds...Full Story

Makkar makes a mark

Added on 09.06.2023

IM Malcolm Pein September 6, 2023   HAMPTON School’s Rajat Makkar, 16, made both an IM and a GM norm in the GM Schiller top section at the Northumbria Masters. The Schiller format has been little used in UK tournaments, but allows for a greater number of players to compete for norms and was an excellent initiative by tournament organiser Tim Wall. The Schiller system features four teams of three, each player taking on all the players in every team, bar their own. French-affiliated...Full Story

Balaji takes Psyon trophy

Added on 09.05.2023

IM Malcolm Pein September 5, 2023   AARAVAMUDHAN Balaji, 18, triumphed at the Psyon Chess Masters, where his 7/9 was sufficient for first place and an IM norm. The event was staged at the MindSports Centre in Ravenscourt Park in west London, a venue which is proving its worth to both tournament organisers and Hammersmith Chess Club. Turkish FM Can Durak came second on 6/9, half a point ahead of South African FM Roland Bezuidenhout. FM Jonathan Pein was defeated by the top three, but...Full Story

England’s tough teams

Added on 09.04.2023

IM Malcolm Pein September 4, 2023   The World Senior Team Championship takes place in Struga, North Macedonia, later this month. England will be fielding a strong team in the over-50 section, headed up by British Champion Michael Adams. John Emms, Keith Arkell, Glenn Flear and Nigel Davies complete the all-GM team. England also have a strong first team in the over-65 category. World and European Senior Champion John Nunn is top board, followed by GM Tony Kosten, FM Terry Chapman and...Full Story

World Cup 2023

Added on 09.03.2023

IM Malcolm Pein September 3, 2023   Vasyl Ivanchuk had a fine run in the FIDE World Cup that was only ended by Magnus Carlsen in the round-of-16. The Ukrainian legend was allowed to play after a campaign to secure his participation. The rules in wartime Ukraine initially prevented him from leaving the country. The great man won three matches, eliminating Wei Yi of China, world ranked 21, on the way. A strategic masterpiece decided this fourth-round match after five draws. White...Full Story

Of space and time

Added on 09.02.2023

IM Malcolm Pein September 2, 2023   AN advantage in space, unlike an advantage in time or development, is something that must be nurtured for it be exploited. Great positional players know how to do this and there was no greater positional player than Anatoly Karpov. The Hedgehog is always a tough defensive setup to overcome. Direct attacks on the kingside often allow a breakout with b6-b5 or d6-d5, when Black’s pieces can exploit weakened squares. Karpov’s approach is to exchange...Full Story

Foreign ground

IM Malcolm Pein September 1, 2023   ENTICING the opponent into an unfamiliar position is one of the main objectives of opening play in this era of detailed computer preparation. Producing a completely original position is even better. At the FIDE World Cup, I thought it would be hard to beat Arjun Erigaisi’s theoretical novelty on move eight against Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa in the quarter-final. On the final day, in the match for third place, Fabiano Caruana forced his opponent onto...Full Story
