Talking during games

Chatting with others who are at a particular game board, i.e. either playing or observing, usually takes place in the Kibitz window, at the bottom of the Game window:

There are three types of game chat you can use to talk at the game board. The default chat will depend on your relationship to the game and the game settings.

Say -- default in your own games -- talks only with your current opponent, or if the game is over, to the opponent in the last game you played.

Kibitz -- default in examined games -- talks with the examiners and observers at the game board with their kibitz options set to receive kibitzes. Kibitzing is most common in examined games and during Live Coverage of chess tournaments, where the feedback of the observers is requested. This can be a fun way to interact with players, and to discuss the current game. However, during normal games, the players have the option of disabling kibitzing with the allowkib variable so they are not disturbed by the game chat.

Whisper -- default in observed games -- talks only to observers, and not to the players of the game. This is how one should generally communicate with other observers while a game is in progress, so as not to disturb the players. A player in the game might also use this command to comment to the audience without tipping off the other player.

Command -- enter server commands -- You can select this option to issue server commands from the game window. The preferred way to enter server commands is on the command line interface.

You can change the default action to communicate in a different way. After choosing the type of communication from the drop-down box, type your message into the text field and press the Enter key.
