Today is the birthday of Grandmaster Gudmundur Sigurjonsson, born in Reykjavik, Iceland, on September 25, 1947.
Sigurjonsson won three times the Icelandic Championship and represented his country in ten Olympiads, between 1966 and 1986.
In his career, he defeated several big names, such as Timman, Reshevsky, Szabo, Beliavsky, Ivkov, Sax, and Miles, to name a few.
Sigurjonsson reached his best rating in January 1976. 2530 Elo points made him 47th on the FIDE list.
He was the second Icelandic player to become a GM, after Fridrik Olafsson.
Sigurjonsson retired from competitive chess a long time ago.
