Today, we remember Grandmaster Friedrich (Fritz) Sämisch, born in Charlottenburg, Germany, on September 20, 1896.
Fritz was German champion in 1920 and Austrian Champion in 1921. He was one of the first chess professionals.
Famous is his "lucky" 1929 win over Capablanca in Karlsbad. Sämisch has tied his name to two important opening variations: one in the East Indian and the second in the Indian Nimzowitch.
Sämisch got back to competitive chess when he was a senior, and he lost an impressive number of games on time.
