Today is the birthday of WGM and IM Yelena Dembo, born in Penza, Russia, on December 8, 1983.
Yelena started playing chess at age 3, followed by her parents, particularly her mother, Nadezhda Fokina, a Russian chess master.
After that, Dembo was trained by the GMs Mark Tseitlin and Alexander Huzman in Israel. After moving to Hungary, Dembo became the national champion in 2003 and then moved on to play for the Greek federation. She participated in six Olympiads between 2002 and 2012. Dembo reached her peak rating of 2482 Elo points in September 2009.
Since 2013, Dembo retired from competitive chess to create a chess school and dedicated herself to teaching and authoring chess books, mainly on openings.
