Today is the birthday of Grandmaster Jusefs Pektevich, born in Riga, Latvia, on December 19, 1940.
Petkevich is of Polish origins and the nephew of a Catholic bishop. Jusefs was the Latvian champion three times between 1969 and 1985.
He represented his country in three Olympiads between 1994 and 1998, obtaining the GM title in 2002 when he won the World Senior Championship.
In his career, Petkevich defeated elite players such as Shirov, Beliavsky, Ehlvest, and Shabalov.
