Today is the birthday of Grandmaster Jan timman, born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on December 14, 1951.
Nine times Dutch Champion, Timan has been at the top for about 30 years. He participated several times in the World Championship, reaching the final of the Candidates two times, losing to Karpov and Short. In 1993, Timman played in the FIDE Championship finals, losing again to Karpov.
Jan reached his peak rating in January 1990 with 2680 Elo points, which made him the third player in the world, behind Kasparov and Karpov.
Appreciated by many fans, Jan was a very versatile player, strong in every part of the game. He authored numerous excellent books and is also a study composer.
