THE plan of …h6 and …g5 for Black in the Giuoco Piano is well known nowadays – Black launches a quick attack against White’s slow build-up if the first player has already castled kingside.
I noted an example of Black trying this against the Ruy Lopez recently.

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Nf6 4.d3 d6 5.0–0 Bd7 6.c3 a6 7.Ba4 h6 8.Re1 g5!?
(A novelty, White logically answers a thrust on the flank with play in the centre)
9.d4 g4 10.Nfd2 (10.Nh4 Nxe4 11.Rxe4 Qxh4 12.d5 Ne7 13.Bxd7+ Kxd7 looks quite all right and if 14.Rxg4 Qh5 15.c4 f5 16.Rd4 Qxd1+ 17.Rxd1 b5! is good for Black)
10...b5 11.Bb3 exd4 12.Nf1 d3 13.Qxd3 Ne5 14.Qe2 Rg8 (The brazen 14...h5 followed by Bf8-h6 looks quite good)
15.Nbd2 h5 16.f4! gxf3 17.Nxf3 Nfg4 18.Ng3 h4 19.Nf5 Qf6?! (19...h3 20.g3 Qb8! computer, would never have occurred to me. The queen emerges on a7 and Black seems to be fine)
20.Rf1 (20.h3! was good for White 20...Nxf3+ 21.Qxf3 Ne5 22.Qe2 Black’s attack fizzles out and after 22...Qg6 23.Kh1 0–0–0 24.a4 White’s attack arrives or if 22...Bxf5 23.exf5 Qxf5 24.Rf1 Qg6 25.Bxf7+)
20...0–0–0 21.N3xh4? (A pawn grab that is punished. Again 21.h3! Nxf3+ 22.Rxf3 Ne5 23.Rf2 and a2–a4 next was very good)
21...d5! (A mighty blow).

22.Bf4 (If 22.Bxd5 Bc5+ 23.Nd4 Qxh4 or 23.Kh1 Nxh2! 24.Kxh2 Bxf5 25.Nxf5 Rh8+ 26.Kg3 Rdg8+ 27.Kf4 Rh4+ 28.g4 Rgxg4+ is truly spectacular)
22...dxe4 23.Qxe4? (23.Bg3 keeps it all together)
23...Bc6 24.Qc2 Bc5+ 25.Kh1 Rd3 (Black’s pieces flood in, 25...Nd3 was also winning)
