Happy International Chess Day!

July 20 is the day!

We celebrate our beloved game with an international day. On this day, in 1924, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) was founded.  The idea to celebrate the world of chess on July 20 was proposed by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), and has been celebrated since 1966!

In December 2019, the United Nations recognized July 20 as World Chess Day.

Our game has been around for centuries, and while in the past times, it was considered an elite activity, today, with the Internet and computers available to almost everyone, it has become a very popular game. There are millions of people who connect to the net daily to play games! In recent years, chess has become part of the education of young people in several countries. 

Chess helps build individual friendships and teaches children about sportsmanship. Children learn how to win graciously and, more importantly, how not to give up when encountering defeat. Chess encourages and rewards hard work. Children learn that those who practice and study the strategies win more games. Also, a study made by James M. Liptrap, a teacher at Klein School in Spring, Texas, showed that playing chess develops problem-solving skills in kids. It also helps improve their overall performance in subjects such as math, reading, and writing. There are several studies that confirm James Litrap's data.

Nowadays, chess champions are almost famous as sports stars, and their earnings have risen exponentially. It's far away from the time when a chess player was regarded as an obscure, slightly crazy, introverted man! Chess is a real Sport now, and its protagonists are regarded as talented individuals, like in any other sport.
