Personal Chats

It is often desired to speak to only one person, privately. The preferred method is with a Chat window. The second method is to chat directly in the Main console. Each method is described below.

Using Chat Windows

A Chat Window is designed to make chatting simple and fun. There is no need to constantly type unix-style commands to chat with a player on ICC.

Initiating a chat is as simple as right-clicking over a player's handle to bring up a player popup menu and selecting Chat from the list. This will open a chat window:

Simply enter the text in the input box at the bottom to talk to the other person. Any tells that come from that user will also be directed to your chat window rather than the Console, keeping your conversation neat and tidy.

You can right-click in the typing bar for a menu that contains special face icons that you can insert in your chats.

Using the main console

To use a tell in the MAIN tab of the Channels console, the syntax is tell <user> <text>.

For example, if frobozz wants to talk to LateKnight, he might issue the command:

In LateKnight's Console window, this message would appear: frobozz tells you: How are you today?

Should you decide you like using the Console to issue tell commands there are a few server shortcuts that can save you some time. The first is that the server shortcut for the "tell" command is "t". Therefore the previous example could also be issued by typing

The next useful shortcut is "." This issues a "tell" command to the LAST USER you sent one to. Going back to the previous examples, if LateKnight was the last person frobozz sent a "tell" to then frobozz could send LateKnight a second "tell" by issuing the following command (note the period at the beginning)

Now that you know how to use the "tell" command there are a few technical points you should be made aware of. First of all the "tell" command only works when trying to talk to a player who is currently logged on. But remember to be careful when using these aliases because they work on the last person/channel you told.
