GM Petrov’s New Strategies in the Middlegame - Vd19: Backward Pawns

Opening: B58: Sicilian Classical

Player(s): Unzicker, Taimanov

This video will show us how to play with a backward pawn. Usually, most players are afraid to have such a pawn as they think she is always weak. But sometimes, having such a pawn is not so bad as there is always some counterplay. Most of the time, such pawns are defended with a bishop, and even if there is some pressure on the semi-open files with the rooks, it is not so dangerous. Often the player with such a pawn controls essential squares in the center, restricting the minor pieces of his opponent. Often the idea is to push the pawn forward whenever possible.
