GM Petrov’s New Strategies in the Middlegame - Vd10: The Italian Game

Opening: C50-C59: Italian Game

Player(s):

In this video, we will see some of the main ideas in the Italian game.
This is one of the earliest openings developed as some of the analyses are from 1600.
Still, many of those ideas are considered as correct. Overall, white has to decide if he wants to play a symmetrical setup where there is only one creative idea with the pin.
Or he can try with c3 to prepare d4. In this case, there are some sharp lines.
The alternative is to play slowly with d3, the legendary giuoco piano, where white first is developing and later trying to prepare d4.
Black then plans to push himself d5 first or to play also more solidly.
