GM Petrov’s Master the Modern Opening for black - Video 5

Opening: :

Player(s):

In this video, GM Marian shows you what to do against the classical system in the Pirc when white wants to go with Be2 and castle.
Black can play c6 and d5, which is a mix between Caro-Kann can and Pirc. Then there are two options: dxe4 leads to a solid but a bit passive position.
If you want something sharper, you can try Nf6 and, after e5, Ne4. Then Ne4 dxe4 Ng5 c5 and there are many sharp lines which you have to know, but black is fine.
Also, you can try, after d6, a6, preparing b5. And after a4, Nc6 is an option, and after d5, Nb4 and the knight is safe there. Another idea, if not d5, is Bg4 and e5.
And then, in the main lines, you can play either Nc6 and Bg4 with some pressure against d4. Or you can play c6 Nbd7 and then either e5 or Qc7 b6 and Bb7.
But you have to know that sometimes you must take on e5 with the knight.
