Chapter 9: The Pawn Wall

One of the vital skills of a chess player is to use pawns to limit the mobility of the opponent's pieces. This concept, which we can call ''building a pawn wall'', is one of the cornerstones of the modern chess strategy. This chapter will examine effective ways of using our pawns to squeeze the opponent, fix his weaknesses, and exploit them. Aaron Nimzowitsch was one of the first chess thinkers to recognize the importance of blockade, prophylaxis, and restraining ideas. Pawns had an instrumental role in his philosophy, laid out in his groundbreaking work ‘My System.’
