Every Russian Schoolboy Knows - Selected games from the Candidates 2020 - 1

Opening: C78: Ruy Lopez 5. 0-0

Player(s): Vachier-Lagrave, Caruana

This 7-part video series presents one game per each of the seven rounds that were played before the tournament was stopped. While we all hope for the resumption one day, the recovery may take a long time. As I now sit idly, confined to my home, there's no better time to reflect on the games, drawing from my experience of commentating live for one of the Russian-language websites.

1) The Candidates got off a fast start, as all four games in Round 1 were hard-fought. Surprisingly Black has got the better of it, winning two and drawing two. While most attention was focused on the upset win by Wang Hao over his heavily favored compatriot Ding Liren, Nepo's win against Giri was undoubtedly the best-played game. Yet, for my opening video, I chose a seemingly quiet game Vachier Lagrave-Caruana. There was a lot of interesting stuff lurking just beneath the surface, and the way the players handled the situation was, in my opinion, indicative of what was to come for both Maxime and Fabiano later in the tournament.
