Chess Olympiad R7: Gukesh brings India one step closer to gold
recap
China prevented a Gukesh vs Ding Liren clash in the decisive match against India by benching the World Champion, following his defeat in the sixth round. That, however, didn't stop Gukesh from becoming the hero of the day, as he scored the decisive victory against arch-rival China. The teenager exhibited his strength of character by winning a 6-hour, 80-move marathon battle against Wei Yi, while the remaining three boards ended in a draw.
In the Women's section, the Indian women also lead with seven victories in seven matches. Their victim in the 7th round, by a clear 3-1, was a direct rival of legendary proportions in women's chess: Georgia. Now, India enjoys a full two-point gap over Poland, Kazakhstan, and France.
