Cristina Foisor was one of the most important chess players in her native Romania.

She was born in 1967 in Petrosani and studied Mathematics at the University of Timișoara.

Cristina was awarded by FIDE the Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title in 1991 and International Master (IM) in 1997.
Foișor won the Women's Romanian Chess Championship five times: in 1989, 1998, 2011, 2012, and 2013. In 2007, she won the title of women's champion of the European Union and received the title of honorary citizen of Petroșani.

In team events, she represented Romania at fourteen Women's Chess Olympiads (from 1988 to 2016), the 2013 Women's World Team Chess Championship, eight Women's European Team Chess Championships, and three Women's Chess Balkaniads. In this latter competition, Foișor won two gold medals (team and individual playing board 2) in 1985. 

She was the mother of Sabina Foisor, the 2017 US Women's Chess Champion.
Foișor died at the Timișoara County Hospital on 22 January 2017.

On August 5-6, the Cristina Foisor memorial takes place in Timisoara, Romania.
The format is a 10-round Swiss. The time control is 15 minutes for the entire game plus a five-second increment starting on move one.

T​​​​​​the tournament is part of a great chess project: the ROMANIA GRAND PRIX 2023.
