Today is the birthday of Grandmaster Vlastimil Jansa, born in Prague, Czech Republic, on November 27, 1942.
Jansa played soccer in his youth; then, he got a degree in sports sciences and joined the army, becoming Captain. 
A student of Emil Richter's, Jansa won the Czechoslovakia Championship thrice between 1964 and 1984. He represented his country in ten Olympiads, winning a Team Silver Medal in 1982, behind Russia. Jansa won the Senior World Championship over 65 in 2018 after placing second in 2006 behind Kortschnoj.
Jansa is the author of several books and the inventor - together with Josef Pribyl - of the Czech variation in the Pirc. Jansa is also a Senior Fide Trainer, with David Navara as one of his students.
