Today, we remember Master Max Judd, born in Tenczynek, Poland, on December 27, 1851.
When he emigrated to the US, Judd decided to establish himself in St. Louis (he became the president of the local chess club), where he worked as a cape maker and trader.
In 1890, Judd beat the US Champion Jackson Showalter, and in 1903 won the US Open Championship.
He defeated important players such as Zukertort, Blackburne, Gunsberg, and Bird during his time.
