THE TATAR OF THE RED ARMY
Alexander Zaitsev e Rashid Nezhmetdinov
Today, we remember International Master Rashid Nezhmetdinov, born in Aktjubinsk, Kazakhstan, on December 15, 1912.
Rashid was of Tatar ethnicity; he grew up in an orphanage and fought in WWII, participating in the Battle of Stalingrad.
Nezhmetdinov participated in three Soviet Championships and became known outside the USSR only in Bucharest in 1953, placing second behind Kortschnoj.
Nezhmetdinov was capable of astonishing combinations and defeated giants like Tal, Spassky, Bronstein, Geller, Boleslavsky, and Polugaevsky in games that have made the history of chess.
His Queen's sacrifices are very famous, especially the one he performed playing Chernikov. Nezhmetdinov was an International Master of checkers, too.
