Tactics for Everyone

Checkmate! - Part 2

Most of us see checkmate as the "romantic" part of chess. It is the adventurous and adacious ones that are able to sacrifice pieces, even the Queen!, to checkmate the enemy King. But Ronen shows us how this is not the way to master this important part of our tactical knowledge; it's all about patterns. When you are able to recognize patterns, you don't have to think about what comes next: you actually see the checkmate on the board, and just go for it. There is a limited number of patterns - if compared to the almost infinite possible positions that happen during a chess game - and this makes it possible to learn at least the most common ones. Back-rank mates, bishop mates, smothered mates, and other common patterns are the subject of this interesting and formative video.
