GM Yermolinsky -  The rise of Artemiev - Part 2

Opening: A07, B12, D47: Réti Opening, Caro–Kann Defence, QGD; Semi-Slav 7.Bc4

Player(s): Artemiev, Giri

I talked about Artemiev's chess two years ago, when he made a big run that took his rating to the mid-2700 territory. Vladislav was not able to sustain his success and dropped down to the low 2700's before the pandemic hit. There may have been different reasons for that, but in this case, it seemed a combination of fatigue and certain issues with his opening repertoire in response to 1.e4. Then the pandemic hit, and the tournament life came to a screeching halt. Vlad kept on playing and studying chess, and the hard work paid off this summer when he finally earned his ticket to premier online events. Artemiev was a latecomer to Carlsen's online party, but he made the most of the opportunity. His results in three tournaments speak for themselves: two 2nd place finishes and one 3rd place. The combined points Vladislav earned qualified him to the grand final to be played later this fall.
