GM Misa Pap’s “Volga Benko Gambit” - Pressure on the Queenside

Opening: A59, A57: Benko Gambit, Benko Gambit with 3...b5 4.cxb5 a6 5.bxa6 Bxa6 6.Nc3 d6 7.e4

Player(s): Pap, Pavlovic, Moljanovic, Lapcevic, Perez

As we already know, play on the Queenside is typical when you use the Volga Gambit. Black has many ways to generate threats on that side of the board and put white under maximal pressure. Aside from using heavy pieces on the a and b files, and with the Knight jumping on c4 or d3, using the long diagonal h8-a1, and the mighty Bishop in g7 to help in those operations, black can sometimes use the c4 pawn push and various other maneuvers. In this 4th installment of his series on the Volga-Benko Gambit, GM Misa shows us these maneuvers, which will teach us how to increase the pressure on the Queenside.
