GM Davorin Kuljasevic - The Importance of Modern Middlegame Tabiyas - Video 6

Opening: B03: Alekhine's Defence 3.d4

Player(s): Rozentalis, Vaganian, Olivencia, Pertuzatti, Perunovic, Berkes, Ivic, Muradli, Robson, Naroditsky

Alekhine's defense is a hyper modernist opening that enjoys popularity on all levels due to its provocative nature; Black invites White to push his pawns forward in order to undermine, attack, and ultimately destroy them. In this chapter, we will examine the Four pawns attack, the sharpest and arguably the most principled way to play against the Alekhine's defense. 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4 d6 4.c4 Nb6 5.f4 White creates a huge central barrier for black pieces and will continue developing his own pieces behind it, enjoying a significant space advantage. Nevertheless, Black can usually organize their forces to exert significant pressure on the white pawn center. To illustrate this interesting dynamic, we will focus on a particular middlegame tabiya that arises after the following standard moves: 5...dxe5 6.fxe5 Nc6 7.Be3 Bf5 8.Nc3 e6 9.Nf3 Be7 10.Be2 0-0 11.0-0 f6 12.exf6 Bxf6.Download HERE the PGN file with the games.
