Game Of the Week: GM Svetozar Gligoric vs. GM Tigran Petrosian

Opening: A56: Benoni defense

Player(s): Gligoric, Petrosian

Three-time U.S. Champion GM Joel Benjamin brings you a new show every Friday at 15:00 Server Time. Joel is regarded by many as one of the best commentators and analysts' we have in the game today -- so if you want to get ahead of the game, get ready to tune-in!

The legendary Serbian Grandmaster Svetozar Gligoric has passed away at the age of 89. Though never quite able to challenge for the World title, Gligoric  was one of the world elite players for several decades. He was champion of Yugoslavia many times, and in the Olympiad he won a host of medals for his national team.

By many accounts he was one of the finest gentlemen in the game as well, and in ICC some of our shows will explore the highlights of his career. Check out Larry Christiansen's tribute to Gligoric in his "Attack with LarryC!" show. Today GM Joel adds to the tribute a lesser-known game, that Gligoric played relatively early in his career. Iti is said that at the time Gligoric was at a crossroad in life, and he wasn't sure if he should continue with his playing career.  This sparkling win over future World Champion Tigran Petrosian, strengthened Gligoric's conviction to keep playing, and he registered many great accomplishments in the coming decades. Let's see how Gligoric handled his illustrious opponent, with the always precise and to-the-point analysis of our GM Joel!
