GM Ben Finegold recaps Round 1. What is the best gift you can give yourself on your birthday? Of course, winning a GP game against the hottest chess player of the moment! MVL did exactly this, defeating Fabiano Caruana in a very intersting game. Nakamura won a brilliant game against a perhaps bit too-daring Jobava, and Mamedyarov had a shocking turnaround, going from a winning position to a lost game in a few moves.

This is a 5 minute preview.
