ICC Chess History and Trivia Quiz #3 -- by Naisortep

"...Emanuel had one last fling as a Poultry-breeder. He had studied a
good many books about the breeding of pigeons and already in his
fertile imagination he saw the glorious Lasker-pigeons carry off all
the gold and silver medals at next year's Berlin Poultry Show. It just
meant seeing about as many moves ahead as he would in any minor chess-
combination. To begin with, he made the first move of purchasing a very
pretty couple of pigeons;his second was to closet the birds in a
comfortably roomy cage; the third was obviously to feed them properly
and to keep the cage neat and clean. So far, so good; but here the
combination seemed to develop a flaw. For many weary and anxious months
nothing happened at all, except the daily feeding and cleaning. But
then, that was merely a repetition of move no. 3. The great Berlin
Poultry Show which was to see the triumph of the Lasker-pigeons had
come and gone. At long last, Emanuel decided to seek the best available
expert advice and while the expert examined the two birds merrily
pecking away in their spotless cage, Dr. Lasker wrinkled his high brow
and shook his fine head.
'I am amazed', he said,'that these two birds haven't started breeding yet.'
'I would be even more amazed if they had',said the expert;'they happen
to be cock-pigeons, both of them , amd their chances of progencey would
seem to be extremely slight.'
Whereupon Emanuel Lasker 'resigned' this particular gambit by
releasing the two birds and giving up all hopes of the world
championship in poultry-breeding."
