Tigran Petrosian was born of Armenian parents in 1929, in Tbilisi, USSR.
He was much influenced by Capablanca and Nimzovich and would later evolve his own style one of prevention.
Petrosian defeated Botvinnik in the 60s to win the world chess championship and was champion from 1963 to 1969.
But Petrosian was more of a match player. In tournaments his playing style often led to draws.
In 1984 at the age of 55 Petrosian met an early death from cancer.
