In 1976 Kortchnoi defected from the USSR. In his match against Karpov for the World Championship he faced enormous pressure since his family remained behind in the USSR.
Moscow finnaly allowed Kortchnois family to emigrate after he lost his second Championship match against Karpov 6 years later.
It is notable that while most chess greats decline as they get older Kortchnoi has remained strong and his games and wins against chess greats span over 50 years.
