GM Ronen Har-Zvi's Opening Series

June 24, 2017

With this series GM Ronen guides us through the secrets of the Petroff Defence

Petroff Defence - Part 10

The Petroff Defence (sometimes called the Russian Defence, and named after Russia's Alexander Petrov, 1794-1867) is considered as one of Black's most reliable and solid methods of meeting the king's pawn opening. It is easy to play and an excellent choice for someone looking for an alternative to the Scotch Opening, the Italian Game and the 'Spanish torture' of the Ruy Lopez. Until a few years ago, the Petroff was an opening that was favored by only a few top Grandmasters, including Anatoly Karpov and Artur Yusupov. However, the last few years have seen a dramatic rise in its popularity, and it now provides battlefields for many top clashes of the modern elite players, including Anand, Kramnik, Leko, Topalov, and Shirov. And in this series, GM Ronen Har-Zvi, takes a closer look under the microscope at the solid Petroff.

GM Boris Alterman's "Gambit Guide"

June 22, 2017

A favorite of Gambit Guide is unquestionably the late great David Bronstein (1924-2006), who was nothing short of being a true chess genius. He was an independent thinker at the board, and our gambit guru, GM Boris Alterman has already showed in an earlier series from 2010 how his original ideas almost single-handedly re-invented the King's Indian Defence in the 1950s. Now, in a new series for 2011, he investigates two highly-respected (and typical) Bronstein gambits for rapid development in the Sicilian Moscow variation after 3. Bb5+. First up will be 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. Bb5+ Bd7 4. Bd7 Qd7 5. c4 Qg4?! 6. 0-0! followed by 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. Bb5+ Bd7 4. Bd7 Qd7 5. 0-0 Nc6 6.c3 Nf6 7. d4!?

33 Chess concepts that took down World Champions

June 20, 2017

The question is always the same: How to win chess games against a good player? In order to beat a stronger player, you need to be ready to induce and exploit mistakes, but how to do that? This video series focuses on concepts, ideas and patterns that are essential to know in order spot those opportunities. Even the best players in the world lose games and this series solely relies on more than 200 sample positions and games that feature a world champion on the losing side vs. a non-world champion, sometimes even against a clear underdog. If even World Champions are taken down with the help of the presented subjects, why not your next opponent in a local club event, or in your next tournament? The more ideas and patterns you know, the easier it will be to find a good solution in your own games. Watching this series will help you to better spot your opponent's mistakes and exploit them more effectively.

GM Yermolinsky's "Every Russian Schoolboy Knows"

June 18, 2017

Former World Champion and legendary chess teacher Mikhail Botvinnik was the originator of the “Every Russian school boy knows” chess aphorism, which alluded to the fact that thousands of unknown schoolboys back in Russia - due to the intense training methods they received from a young age - likely knew more about the game than most professionals did in the West.

One player who came through that legendary Soviet training camp is former U.S. Champion GM Alexander Yermolinsky.  And each Sunday in his hit show, “Every Russian Schoolboy Knows”, Alex will explain and expand on all the top tips and tricks gleaned from those famed training methods.

Today's show is: Build your opening repertoire - Part 28: KID Averbakh #5

The Averbakh System, along with its variants such the Petrosian Variation in the Classical (early d4-d5) and the unnamed h3...Bg5 system, represents a shift in White's approach to combatting the Kings Indian. Instead of focusing on the queenside alone while accepting a certain danger of being checkmated on the kingside (as it comes in the Classical Variation), White employs a strategy of full court press and containment. Playing g2-g4 is an integral part of White's setup. It serves both as a deterrent against f7-f5 (open g-file can be dangerous for the black king) and the basis of future attack with h4-h5. This is what I had to deal with when I took up the Kings Indian in my early twenties, and I had faced a lot of the Averbakh. The theory of that day recommended Black all but abandon his standard plans with e7-e5 and focused solely on Benoni transpositions after c7-c5. I was young and stubborn and I wanted to contradict, so my efforts concentrated on making e7-e5 work (6...h6). The first five videos tell the story of that journey. Some ten years later I was delighted to see my ideas becoming mainstream, as the reply 6..Na6 became the most popular choice. In Part 6 I briefly introduce White's most ambitious plan of 7.f2-f4, a cross of the Averbakh and the Four Pawns Attack. No series on the Averbakh KID can be complete without some coverage of the classical games in the Symmetrical Benoni structure (parts 7-8), but there are some new development there as well (parts 9-10) Enjoy!

Sharpen your chess-sense with IM Watson

June 09, 2015

In this series, John Watson looks at a wide variety of unconventional openings, ranging from early flank moves to wild piece sacrifices. Everyone has to face such variations from time to time, and most players are not well-prepared to deal with the challenges they pose. Watson provides you with the ammunition to punish the antipositional or overambitious moves that often characterize irregular play.
