Section Eligibility and Awards


Grade and Age Requirements by Section:

High School Sections: K - 12, Born after 5/22/02
Middle School Sections: K - 8, Born after 5/22/07
Elementary Sections: K - 5, Born after 5/22/10
Primary Sections: K - 3, Born after 5/22/12
K-1 Sections: Born after 5/22/14

Rating Requirements by Section:

High School Championship Section: Player or School Teammate 1800+
Middle School Championship Section: Player or School Teammate 1600+
Elementary, Primary, and K-1 Championship Sections: No rating restrictions.
All other sections: must also be under rating requirement in section name or unrated.


The May 2022 USCF Rating List is used, except unofficial ratings at uschess.org or official May Online Regular ratings if not rated on the May 2022 Official USCF List. Players with Official Online Regular Ratings over 100 points over section limit are not eligible for individual free/reduced entry prizes.

* The top-scoring New York State girl in the High School Championship Section also qualifies to represent New York
State in the 10th Annual WIM Ruth Haring National Tournament of Girls State Champions, this summer at the 2022 U.S. Open in Rancho Mirage, California!

Free/Reduced Entry Prize Details:
Championship Sections: Individual prizes (each Championship section): Free or reduced price entry to specified Continental Chess tournaments for 10 months to 1st, for 8 months to 2nd, 6 months to 3rd, 3 months to 4th.
Team prizes (each Championship section): 6 months free or reduced entry to specified CCA tmts. to 1st team, top 4 scorers, 3 months free/reduced to 2nd team!

Non-Championship Sections
Individual prizes (each non-Championship section): Free or reduced price entry to specified Continental Chess tmts. for 8 months to 1st, for 5 months to 2nd, 3 months to 3rd.
Team prizes (each non-Championship section): 5 months free or reduced price entry to specified CCA tmts. to 1st team, top 4 scorers.
*Free/reduced price entries courtesy of Continental Chess and valid for specified CCA non-scholastic tournaments with 100% guaranteed prize funds.

High School Mixed Doubles Prizes:


Chess sets to Top 5 Mixed Doubles teams
6 months free entry to specified CCA tournaments. to 1st team, 3 months to 2nd.
* Mixed Doubles teammates may play in different sections, may attend different schools, but team must average U2200 and must sign up on-site (no extra charge!) before rd. 3; teammate pairings avoided but possible.
