Before some months I have lost on time with black following game on 5-minute control:

1.Nf3 d5 2.d4 e6 3.c4 c6 4.Qc2 Nf6 5.g3 Be7 6.Bg2 0-0 7.0-0 b6 8.Rd1 Ba6 9.b3 Nbd7 10.Nbd2 Rc8 11.e4 c5 12.exd5 exd5 13.Bb2 cxd4 14.Nxd4 Qc7 15.Rac1 dxc4 16.Nf5 Bc5 17.bxc4 Bb7 18.Bxb7 Qxb7 19.Nb3 Qf3 20.Nxc5 Rxc5 21.Ne7+ Kh8 22.Nd5 Rfc8 23.Nxf6 Nxf6 24.Qd3 Qxd3 25.Rxd3 h6 26.Bxf6 gxf6 27.Rd7 R8c7 28.Rxc7 Rxc7 29.Kf1 Rc5 30.Ke2 Rh5 31.h4 Ra5 32.Rc2 Ra3 33.Kf1 Kg7 34.Kg2 f5 35.c5 bxc5 36.Rxc5 Kg6 37.Rc6+ f6 38.Rc2 h5 39.Rd2 f4 40.f3 fxg3 41.Kxg3 Ra4 42.Re2 Ra3 43.Rc2 Ra4 44.Rb2 Ra3 45.Re2 Ra4 46.Kh3 Ra3 47.Kg2 Ra4 48.Kg3 Ra3 49.Rd2 Ra4 50.Rc2 Ra3 51.Rb2 Ra4 52.Rb8 Rxa2 53.Rg8+ Kf7 54.Rh8 Kg6 55.Rg8+ Kf7 56.Ra8 Kg6 57.Rb8 Kf7 58.Rb7+ Kg6 59.Rc7 Ra3 60.Rd7 Ra4 61.Re7 Ra5 62.Re8 Ra1 63.Rg8+ Kf7 64.Rh8 Kg6 65.Ra8 Kf7 66.Kf4 Kg6 67.Rg8+ Kf7 68.Rb8 Ra4+ 69.Kg3 Kg6 70.Rc8 Kf5 71.Rg8 Ra1 72.Rh8 Kg6 73.Rc8 Kf7 74.Kf4 Kg6 75.Rg8+ Kf7 76.Rb8 Kg6 77.Kg3 Kf7 78.Rc8 Kg6 79.Rc4 Rd1 80.Ra4 Rd7 81.Ra5 Rb7 82.Kf4 Rc7 83.Ra6 Rb7 84.Kg3 Rf7 85.Kg2 Rg7 86.Kf2 Rf7 87.Ra5 Rg7 88.Ke3 Rf7 89.f4 Re7+ 90.Kf3 Rf7 91.f5+ Kg7 92.Ke4 Re7+ 93.Kf4 Rf7 94.Ra6 Re7 95.Rc6 Rd7 96.Re6 Rc7 97.Rd6 Rb7 98.Rc6 Rf7 99.Ke4 Kf8 100.Kd5 Kg7 101.Ke6 Rb7 102.Kd5 Rd7+ 103.Ke4 Rb7 104.Ra6 Rb4+ 105.Ke3 Rxh4 106.Rxa7+ Kh6 107.Kf3 Kg5 108.Ra5 Rf4+ 109.Kg3 Rxf5 110.Ra8 h4+ 111.Kg2 Re5 112.Rg8+ Kf4 113.Rh8 f5 114.Rxh4+ Ke3 115.Ra4 f4 116.Ra3+ Ke4 117.Kf2 Kf5 118.Ra8 Kg4 119.Rg8+ Rg5 120.Rf8 Rf5 121.Rg8+ Rg5 122.Rh8 Rf5 123.Rh1 Rg5 124.Rg1+ Kf5 125.Rb1 Rg4 126.Kf3 Kg6 127.Kxg4 Black forfeits on time 1-0

The white player made 100 moves in rook vs rook ending in order to flag me! If it was 1-minute game there is no problem with this, but in longer time contol it is very unpleasant.

And when under normal conditions the game can come to 100 moves and more without mate or resignation, why to interrupt it by time loss ?

One of my ideas to avoid this is to give 1 second increment in 5-minute and 3-minute games for example from 51th move.

Comparing to control with increment from 1-st move, it will not make most of games noticeably longer. I have found that only about 1/10 of my 5-min games and 1/15 of 3-minute games were 65 moves and longer. And even 80-move game can take maximum 11 minutes instead of 10 for 5-minute. So players who don’t like to play too long games, will not suffer from this change.

This is a very good idea.

What’s the tl;dr version? Are you saying that you want to add an increment to the pools?

Of course, I’ve been hammering away at this for literally years. I’m not going to rehash it but yes…there really should be a blitz pool with increment here. It’s things like this that are easy to implement, strongly desired by the community, and yet nothing happens with them that make me question what’s going on behind the curtains at ICC.

I very much support a small increment pool (i.e. 2 seconds), I find it curious that there is any opposition to such an improvement, since non increment pools are already available for those who want it. (A 3 2 and 10 2 pools would be very much appropriate.)

Additionally, having only non time increment pools available are somewhat intolerant and hostile to those who are slowed down due to physical handicaps brought on by age or other conditions.

Furthermore, there has been a long standing demand for such improvement and it is odd that ICC has so far resisted in doing this. Hopefully, this will be implemented soon and we will all be happy.

Lastly, I know a couple of chess players and former ICC members who lost their desire to continue their membership because it became a brutal experience for them. Between being “flaged” constantly in drawn or winning positons, and being exposed to obvious computer cheaters, they disappeared from ICC ,and what they have told me at my local club I can only sympathize with them.

Hopefully, ICC will continue to learn and improve by adding a much demanded increment pool.

It is sad that this is not implemented. Easy to do, no harm for anyone. Why not? There would still be pools without an increment for those willing to play R vs. R for 50 moves. Others could enjoy playing again.
