Personal Notes

Hello, I'm [not so] new to Chess. My entire chess history has been played here on ICC.

Fascinating game: The more I learn about chess, is the more I realize how little I know about chess!

Learning opening moves, w/o an understanding of the principles of "why" is useless and limiting. I hope to learn a structured decision tree to help me understand whats happening on the board, and how to respond to it.

Boston MA- USA (GMT-5)

"The Game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement; several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired and strengthened by it, so as to become habits ready on all occasions; for life is a kind of Chess, in which we have often points to gain, and compet

adversaries to contend with, and in which there is a vast variety of good and ill events, that are, in some degree, the effect of prudence, or the want of it. By playing at Chess then, we may learn:

1st, Foresight: which looks into futurity, and considers the consequences that may attend an action...

2nd, Circumspection: which surveys the whole Chessboard, or scene of action: The relation of Pieces, and their situations...

3rd, Caution: not to make our moves too hastily...

Finally and lastly, we learn by Chess the habit of not being discouraged by present appearances in the state of our affairs as well as the habit of hoping for a favorable change, and that of persevering in the search of resources. " -The Morals of Chess, pub 1786: Ben Franklin
