My ICC name is in honour of Abou-Bakr Mohammed Bin Yahia Al-Suli, one the great arab chess masters of the 9th century, who flourished in Baghdad during the Abbasid Caliphate (c. 880-946).
Al-Suli wrote one of the earliest studies of chess, the Khitab Al-Shatranj, or "Chess Treatise". He also composed some elegant studies which are still quoted in problem collections. Information on him can be found in H.A.L. Murray's great classic "A History of Chess".
His skill was such that his name became a synonym for great skill at Shatranj, the early version of chess that he played.
He is sometimes known as "As-Suli" but Al-Suli is the version endorsed by Murray in his History of Chess.
I am originally from the French-speaking part of Switzerland but currently live in London.
