FIDE WC Match 2016 - Game 6

Added on 11.18.2016

Half the games gone, and the score is perfectly equal:3.0-3.0 with 6 draws. The World championship Match is now being played over 6 games, and Karjakin starts with white. Today the amazing preparation that the two players have been showing so far was even more evident. They didn't even analyze the games after it ended: it was all pretty much forced. The fans are getting a bit restless, but we should not forget that so many matches for the crown have gone on and on with draw after draw, to then...Full Story

FIDE WC Match 2016 - Game 5

Added on 11.17.2016

Fifth draw, but for the first time, Magnus Carlsen had to defend against the Challenger, Sergey Karjakin. Another 5+ hour battle, that opened with the Giuoco Piano, one of the most difficult openings to be spelled by everyone! It's not an opening seen very often at the top level, but it's got its share of fashionable opportunities for both colors. The game was very tense with both players trying to keep the balance intact. Carlsen had to live a very worrying moment, when Karjakin found all the...Full Story

FIDE WC Match 2016 - Game 4

Added on 11.15.2016

Another epic battle in Game 4 between World Champion Magnus Carlsen and Challenger Sergey Karjakin. The roles seem to be clear now after two games lasted total almost 15 hours: Carlsen is the Great Attacker, and his foe is the Great Defender. In a Ruy Lopez, Magnus with Black equalized very easily, with Karjakin surprisingly playing a bit too timidly. Magnus got the up hand without apparent effort, but then all the greatness of Karjakin's defensive skills came out, and despite trying really...Full Story

FIDE WC Match 2016 - Game 3

Added on 11.14.2016

After two "quiet" draws, the World Championship Match has exploded into a rollercoaster! Almost seven hours of a fierce battle between the two foes, with Carlsen pushing hard to win, and Karjakin showing all his legendary prowess at defending. The game has been a long struggle. Carlsen started playing a rare variation of the Ruy Lopez, with 10.Re2 instead of the canonic 10.Re1. this move pushed Karjakin into deep thinking, but then the Russian chess wizard resolved all the issues, balancing the...Full Story

FIDE WC Match 2016 - Game 2

Added on 11.12.2016

Second draw in a row today. A Ruy Lopez, closed variation, with some interesting moments, but overall a "quiet" game. The two contenders are studying each other, trying to find a weakness in each other's preparation. So far Carlsen and Karjakin have been very careful and, giving the importance of what's at stake, it is quite normal. your web browser and/or your host do not support iframes as required to display the chessboard Here is a 5-minute preview of Gm Smerdon's analysis of the...Full Story

40 years. That is the interminable time that took the US to win again. Today, with the last round's win over Canada, the US team grabbed the gold medal at the 42nd Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan. Back then in 1976, it was  Byrne, Kavalek, Evans, Tarjan, Lombardy;  today's team, led by coach Aleksandr Lenderman, is one of the strongest squad ever, with three top players on the first three boards: Caruana, Nakamura and So, and a strong Sam Shankland on fourth. Bilbao Masters Final 2016 - Round 10

Added on 07.23.2016

GM John Fedorowicz video recap  Well, we all knew that today, after that yesterday Magnus secured the victory of the Bilbao Masters Final, was going to be a peaceful round. And the six players didn't disappoint us, by playing some of the most boring round ever seen on the chess scene. There is really little to say about today's games, so let's try to analyze how this event went for each of the top guys participating. Magnus: what to say, he wins each and every event he participates in. He...Full Story

Bilbao Masters Final 2016 - Round 9

Added on 07.22.2016

GM Alex Yermolinsky video recap  Magnus again. It's getting almost boring, isn't it? I have to steal a line that a friend of mine sent me today, right after the Norwegian won his game with Giri and the tournament: "The dust from the last event was just settling into a pale gray blanket when the Carlsen train steamed through Bilbao. A thick and choking fog enveloped the venue and the other combatants fell to the floor, unable to withstand...". This quasi-poetic joke about Magnus' dominance of...Full Story

Bilbao Masters Final 2016 - Round 8

Added on 07.21.2016

GM Ronen Har-Zvi video recap  In their last game until the World Championship Match, to be held in November, Carlsen and Karjakin didn't make their fans very happy today. Game drawn in 19 moves. There's not much to say about the game, if not that probably Carlsen is happy with what he's got until now in Bilbao and, with two rounds to go, he's probably sure about who will win the event. And Karjakin is most likely hiding everything he's preparing for the big match. For sure, from what we saw in...Full Story

Bilbao Masters Final 2016 - Round 7

Added on 07.20.2016

IM Christof Sielecki video recap  It looks like Karjakin is not going to reveal any of his preparation for the World Championship match, looking at his rather insipid games. Today he played again a super-solid, risk-free game, drawing easily. Nakamura tried harder, creating some issues to Wesley So to resolve. Wesley though managed to set up an interesting counter-play plan, forcing the game into a drawish endgame. your web browser and/or your host do not support iframes as required to...Full Story
