Game Of the Week: GM van Kampen vs. GM Rapport

Opening: B09: Pirc

Player(s): van Kampen, Rapport

Three-time U.S. Champion GM Joel Benjamin brings you a new show every Friday at 15:00 Server Time. Joel is regarded by many as one of the best commentators and analysts' we have in the game today -- so if you want to get ahead of the game, get ready to tune-in!

In the Reykjavik Open, two of the more enterprising young grandmasters, 19-year-old Robin van Kampen of the Netherlands, and Hungarian Richard Rapport, who was just turning 18, contested a strange tactical skirmish.

A cutting edge opening led to a position that was hard enough for me to get a handle on with a chess engine; over the board the players must surely have struggled. Eventually the smoke cleared and a victor was determined, but should the game have gone the other way? Let's try to figure that out.
