Game Of the Week: GM Peter Svidler vs. GM Nikita Vitiugov

Opening: C02: French, Advance Variation

Player(s): Svidler, Vitiugov

Three-time U.S. Champion GM Joel Benjamin brings you a new show every Friday at 15:00 Server Time. Joel is regarded by many as one of the best commentators and analysts' we have in the game today -- so if you want to get ahead of the game, get ready to tune-in!

For the most part, the Russian Championship was a snooze fest, with a 70% draw rate. Dmitry Andreikin was truly "first among equals," winning a playoff against five others who finished on plus-one. Peter Svidler tied for first despite not winning a game until the last round.

He did at least get warmed up in round eight when he had to fight for his life against one of the also-rans, Nikita Vitiugov. Vitiugov developed a raging initiative out of the opening but in the complications found it wasn’t so easy to put the specialist of the Russian Superfinal away. Let’s break it down with GM Joel!
