How do promotions work?
The pawn is the only chess piece that cannot move
backwards, when it gets to the end of the board, it can promote to
whatever other piece it wants (except a King) of its own color.
When the pawn moves to the last rank, it
promotes to another piece (most often people will choose a Queen as
that is the strongest piece).
