Dortmund Sparkassen 2003
Round five by Chriss Lass
First things first. It's hot here in Germany. Really
hot. As you can see on the picture of Germany we had
90°F (31°C) today. Expected for the next days is at
least 96°F (36°C). That's why today the theater was not
really overcrowded. In know this is a chess report,
but Europe's weather situation is extreme this year.
Very hot winds from Africa come over Portugal, Spain
and France to Germany. In France they are already
turning down nuclear power stations, because they
can't cool them anymore. Huge areas in Portugal and
France are burning at the moment. Come on! We want
fire on the boards and not out there.
So let's go to today's games. Bologan - the tiger -
decided he has a safe lead. And so, after some quick
exchanges, he offered a draw at move 20 and Radjabov
accepted. I got the impression that Teimour was happy
about the half point on his scorecard and Bologan just
wanted some extra time before tomorrows rest day.
Right after the game you could find them analyzing
their draw in the press center. To the right of Viorel
you can see GM Dautov who is Anand's second here at
the tournament. Behind Teimour you see his father.

Najdorf time today. Young Arkadi Najditch was playing
Vishy Anand. Arkadi decided to castle queenside
and so Vishy attacked his king with two rooks and the
queen on the "b" file. Arkadi was not frightned and
tried to attack Vishy's king. But too late. After 33
moves Vishy got his first full point on his
scoresheet. But I think it's already too late for
Anand to catch the tiger Bologan.

Analysis by GM Boris Alterman and Jason Doss
The second Najdorf - a Byrne attack - happened on the
board of world champion Kramnik. He first fooled
everyone and appeared a few minutes late. Confusion
was big among the journalists as you can see on the
picture. Leko was patiently waiting backstage for
Kramnik to arrive. Then after a few moves it seemed
that Peter was taking a look at Vishy's board and
decided it is a good idea to line up two rooks and the
queen on the "b" file to attack Vladi's king. But
Kramnik managed a queen exchange. A few more pieces
were gone soon and so they declared the rook endgame
drawn.
Replay Kramnik - Leko 1/2
Special guest today in the press center was giant
World Heavyweight Title challenger
Vitali Klitschko. He is a friend of Kramnik and likes
to play chess in his spare time too.
